Five compositions on one CD, some solo and some chamber pieces, spanning almost thirty years of creativity, from 1966 to1993. M A R K K O P Y T M A N was born in 1929 in the former Soviet Union, where he received his early training in piano and music theory. Later, after completing medical studies and concomitant with his medical practice, he studied composition with Prof. R. Simovitch at the Lvov Academy of Music and Professor S. Bogatirev at the Tchaikovsky State Conservatory in Moscow, earning his second Ph.D. in 1958. Kopytman taught at the music academies of Moscow, Alma-Ata and Cisheneu. Several of his compositions (including the opera "Casa Mare") won prizes and distinctions in competitions and festivals in the USSR.After immigration to Israel in 1972 Kopytman was appointed Professor of Composition at the Rubin Academy of Music and Dance in Jerusalem. Since 1979 he has been permanent guest professor at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
Throughout this period, Mark Kopytman has developed a strong individual style, which fuses elements of Jewish folklore derived from different sources with economical and controlled use of modern music innovations. The resulting music is characterized by a tendency towards powerful dramatic expression, melodic lines in a heterophonic splittings, a variety of textures obtained from a manifold structure, and skillful and rich instrumentation.
