Gavriel Lipkind was born in Tel-Aviv in 1977 to a family of Russian immigrants. He started learning the cello at the age of six and three years later began studying with Professor Uzi Wiesel at the Tel-Aviv Rubin Academy of Music.
Gavriel Lipkind has performed with all the major Israeli orchestras including the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under Zubin Mehta, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra with whom he has also broadcast and recorded, the Israel Chamber Orchestra, the Haifa Symphony Orchestra, the Israel Camerata, Jerusalem and the Beersheba Sinfonietta. American orchestras he has performed with include the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra under David Lockington and the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra under Zdenek Macal and Pinchas Zuckerman. In Europe he has played with orchestras such as the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra, the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Orchestra of the Symphony of Nations under Justus Frantz and at the World Cello Congress where he premiered Vieuxtemps’s Cello Concerto no.1.
Lipkind’s extensive chamber music experience includes collaborations with musicians such as Pinchas Zukerman, Yuri Bashmet, Gidon Kremer, Pierre Amoyal and Ralph Kirshbaum and performances at numerous festivals and cello congresses. Gavriel Lipkind has won numerous prizes and awards including first prizes at the Aldo Parisot Competition (1993) and the Paul Ben-Haim Competition for Israeli Music (1993), the Award for Most Promising Cellist at the 5th Rostropovich International Cello Competition in Paris (1994), first prize at the Fran?ois Shapira String Competition (1996) and Top Prize at the 2nd Leonard Rose International Cello Competition in Washington D.C. (1997). In 2000 he was a prizewinner at the First International Pablo Casals Cello Competition in Kronberg and a year later won first prize at the Violoncello Wettbewerb des Freundkreis at Karslruhe. In 2002 he was awarded two special prizes at the Grand Prix Emanuel Feuermann in Berlin. Lipkind’s recitals and concerts are regularly broadcast on Israel Radio and Television and in Germany, the USA and Radio Europe. In 1991 his performance with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra under Zubin Mehta was broadcast live on Israel Television. He gives annual masterclasses in Pennsylvania, Holland, Ireland, Germany, Italy and Israel and is a contributing member of the Live Music Now organisation.
For this recording, Gavriel Lipkind is performing on a 1702 A. M. Garani violoncello (Bologne).
